McClellan, GEORGE

BRINTON, U.S.A., 1826-1885. Major gen. U.S. Vols. 1861; given command of the entire army by reason of his brilliant services in W. Va.; admirable as an organizer, but more succe ful in retreat than in advance; removed Nov. 1862 for slowne in pursuing Lee. Much has been pub. both in justification and in criticism of his management of the army. He was Democratic candidate for the Presidency 1864; Engineer in N. Y. 1868-78, and Gov. of N. J. 1878-81. McClellan's Own Story appeared 1886.-His father, GEORGE, M.D., 1796-1847, was one of the first surgeons of his time, and chief founder of Jefferson Medical Coll.1826, and prof. there 1826-38, medical dept. of Pa.
