West Point

(-point,) in New York, a vill. of Orange co., on the Hudson, 52 m. N. of New York city. At this place, crowning an elevated plateau, and both picturesquely and strategically situated, is the U. S. Military Academy, founded in 1794. It covers with its drill grounds, ., a tract of ground amile in circumference. During the Revolutionary times, a strong fort commanded the Hudson at this point, the contemplated surrender of which by the traitor Gen. Arnold led to the military execution of Major André, 1780.
