Eusynchite

( Min.) Same as DECHENITE (q. v.). Eu'taw, in Alabama, a post-town, cap. of Greene co., about 100 m. W.N.W. of Montgomery. Eutaw, in Mi i ippi, a post-office of Bolivar co. Eutaw Indians. See UTAH. Eutaw Springs, in S. Carolina, a small tributary of the Santee river, in Charleston co. A battle was fought on the banks of this stream in 1781, between about 2,000 Americans under Gen. Greene, and about 2,300 British under Col. Stuart. The latter were defeated and driven from their camp; but the American soldiers in their search for plunder becoming disorganized and scattered, the British returned and Greene was compelled to retire. In the night, however, the British retreated toward Charleston, leaving 138 killed and wounded, and about 500 prisoners. The Americans lost about 550 in killed, wounded, and mi ing. Eu'terpe. ( Myth .) One of the Muses, daughter of Jupiter and Mnemosyne. She presided over music, and was looked upon as the inventre of the flute. She is represented as crowned with flowers, and holding a flute in her hands. (Bot.) A genus of plants, order Palmacea . The species E. montana is one of the Cabbage-palms, so called because the young leaf-buds are boiled and eaten like cabbage. From the fruits of other species, particularly E. a ai and edulis , pleasant beverages are prepared.
