MUSCLE

(Gr. St;, and yaoTt\p, belly.) A double muscle, situated externally between the lower jaw ami mastoid proce ; it is attached to the os hyoides in toe human subject at the middle of its course. It pulls the lower jaw downwards and backwards; and when the jaw3 are shut it draws the larynx, and with it the pharynx, upwards in the act of swallowing. [s. 361]
