BID WELL, John Carne ( eld. child of Joseph Bid well of Exeter, merchant ). b. Exeter 1815; a merchant at Sydney N.S.W. 1838; made an exploring voyage to New Zealand 1839; comr. of crown lands and chairman of bench of magistrates for district of Wide Bay N.S.W.; discovered the Bunya Bunya tree (afterwards-named after him Araucaria Bid well i) and the Nymphæa gigantea; author of Rambles in New Zealand 1841. d. Tinana, Mary borough, Australia March 1853.
