John . Superintendent of consular department in Foreign Office 15 Jany. 1826 to 30 Sep. 1851 when he retired on pension. d. Park place, St. James’s st. London 31 Oct. 1853 aged 70. BID WELL, John Carne ( eld. child of Joseph Bid well of Exeter, merchant ). b. Exeter 1815; a merchant at Sydney N.S.W. 1838; made an exploring voyage to New Zealand 1839; comr. of crown lands and chairman of bench of magistrates for district of Wide Bay N.S.W.; discovered the Bunya Bunya tree (afterwards-named after him Araucaria Bid well i) and the Nymphæa gigantea; author of Rambles in New Zealand 1841. d. Tinana, Mary borough, Australia March 1853.
