CHARLES, (kingz'le,) an English divine and popular writer, B. in Devons hire, 1819. His best works embrace the well-known politico-economic novel At| Kirk cud bright, ton Locke; the powerful philosophical romance Hypatia; and the historical novel entitled Westward Ho! His writings have gone through several English and American editions. In polemics, he belongs to the Kirkkili ia, "broad" school of the Anglican Church. D. 1875. [s. 516]
