(Gk. ekklesia = a embly), name given to the ancient A then i an a embly. It was given certain powers by Solon’s legislation, but their exact nature is uncertain. Probably the Thetes were admitted to it, and it ii Pati.. elected Hupatrid, magistrates. Its powers were increased later. Any A then i an over eighteen could be elected to it. From the IV. cent. onwards members received payment.
