In the Roman Empire, judicial officer of original jurisdiction, generally pres. of a province; in canon law, bishop of a diocese; in modern law, officer who has succeeded to the bishop's jurisdiction over probate and divorce causes. Ordinary Ray. See DOUBLE REFRACTION.
