beryllia

[From beryllium (q.v.), BeO.] Oxide of beryllium = glucina. A light, tastele , colourle powder, separated from alumina by its solubility in a cold concentrated solution of ammonium carbonate. It is soluble in caustic alkalies. It forms soluble colourle salts, which do not form alums nor give a blue colour with cobalt nitrate when tested by the blow-pipe. These salts have a sweet taste, hence the name glucina. Beryllium salts are precipitated as beryllia hydrate by (NH4)2S; the precipitate is di olved by long boiling with NH4Cl. A rare white malleable metal, the same as Glucinum; sp. gr., 21. It does not decompose water. Its melting-point is below that of silver.
