RUBIN STEIN, ANTON

(7829-94), Ru . pianist and composer of Jewish extraction; became music-teacher in St. Petersburg, 1848, and there he founded the Ru . Musical Soc., 1861, and Conservatoire, 1862, of which he became director; toured much, giving recitals; his operas are le known than his symphonies Ocean and Dramatic; he opposed Wagner i an ism and had much in common with Schubert and Mendel ohn; his technique as a pianist was great, and he played with marvelous emotion.
