ST. IGNATIUS OF (1491of the Society of Jesus, was of Span. birth, and went as a page-boy the Span. court; and being courageous and energetic, became a soldier. fighting in Navarre in 1521, he injured at the siege of Pampeiuna, while recovering began to repent worldly ways. Entering the Abbey Montserrat in 1522, he led a life of votion; afterwards went to Rome, then on pl imace to Jerusalem; back to Italy, was viewed as a heretic the Inquisition; continued his ings in Spain and then in Paris Italy; ordained priest, 1538. While Rome in 1537 he saw vision of which led him to found the Society Jesus, which was sanctioned by Pius III. in 1540, and of which he self was elected general in 1541. drew up the Constitutions of the and finished his Spiritual Hexercises; devoted the rest of his life to the 1629
