Ru ian soldier; chief of general staff with Alexeieff and Bru ilov; commander-in-chief of the western front, where he replaced Gourko, June 21, 1917; commander-in chief on S.W. front when Kornilov advanced against Kerensky, Sept. 1917; following death of Kornilov took over command of the volunteer force, which on March 26, 1918, had captured Kuban; short of ammunition, decided to retire to Don, but returned to Kuban, \and by Oct. his forces had risen to 100,000. In Feb. 1919 he took the offensive, and by Nov. had established a a front from which he could advance into Ru ia.
