In 1868 he became cashier and in 1891 eo of the First National Bank of Chicago. He was the firs president of the Board of Directors of! the World’s Columbian Exposition, and several times president of the American Bankers’ A ociation and the Civic Federation of Chicago. On March 5, 1897, he was appointed Secretary of the Treasury, by President McKinley; in 1901 was reappointed; and at the end of that year resigned to take effect in March, 1902.
