[ Gr.tenthrēdōn =a kind of wasp or fly.] Entom.: Sawfly, the typical genus of Tenthre dinide. Upper wings with four submarginal cells; antenne with the third and fourth joints of the same length. Tenthredo æthiops , a small black species, deposits eggs on cherry and other fruit trees. The larvæ are black, and often numerous enough to do the trees great damage.
