Lima

Capital of Peru, 7 miles e. from Callao, its seaport; founded by Pizarro 1535. Its university, opened in 1551, is the oldest in America. L. has suffered often from earthquakes and insurrections; was taken by the Chilians 1821, 1838, and occupied by them Jan. 1881-Oct. 1883; is the chief commercial center of Peru. Pop., 1891, 103,556.
