The dental formula is, in each half jaw, 3 incisors, 1 canine, 4 premolars, and 3 molars. The name was really given from the knotted appearance of the tail in dried specimens, when the skin had shrunk on the bones, as represented in some figures of the animal in which tail a string of it is, however, appropriate, since during the rut the tail swells to double its usual size, and has a gibbous appearance. 21.
