Thomas, an English phil an. thropist; founder of Guy’s Hospital, South wark, London; born in London in 1644. He contracted with the University of Oxford for the privilege of ~— Bibles, which he continued te io for many years. By this means, and by selling out his original shares in South Sea stock at a great advantage, he ama ed a fortune of nearly $2,500,000. He was a liberal donor tc charitable institutions of all kinds. He died’ Dec. 27, 1724.
