STALL

In Architecture, a seat raised on the sides of the choir or chancel of a church, mostly appropriated to a dignitary of a cathedral or collegiate church. Sometimes stalls are placed near the high altar, for the priest and deacon or subdeacon to rest whilst the service in certain parts is carried on by the choristers. In churches of the kinds named there is generally a series of them. At St. George's Chapel, Windsor, a stall is appropriated to every Knight of the Garter after his election and installation.
