(v6l’-lé), John Frederick, Bethlehem, Pa., April 4, 1863—Jan. 12, _ 1933; founder of a choir with which from 1900 he gave remarkable productions of the works of Bach; in Igor at a three-day festival the Christmas oratorio, “Pa ion According to St. Matthew,” and Ma in B minor were given entire; 1904, a nine-day festival of Bach’s works was given; 1905 prof. University California and cond. symph. concerts at the Open Air Greek Theatre at Berkeley, Cal.; later again active in Bethlehem until his death.
