LICK, JAMES

(1796-1876), American manufacturer and philanthropist; 6. Fred ericks burg, Pa. He established a pianoforte busine at New York in 1821, and later maintained branches in Philadelphia and various cities in South ‘America. He removed to California in '1847 and added to his already large ‘fortune by investments in real estate ‘and other enterprises. He established a | trust fund in 1874, two years before his death, by which he devised $3,000,000 to various civic enterprises of San Francisco, such as public baths, schools and memorials, excepting the amount of | $700,000, which was given to the Uni- | versity of Southern California for the construction of an observatory and the: placing therein of a telescope to be more powerful than any other in existence. It is this latter bequest which has served chiefly to perpetuate his name,
