IONIAN ISLANDS

(388° 30’ N., 20° 30’ E.), group of islands on W. coast of Greece, consisting of seven islands:Corfu, ante (Zakynthos); surface mountainous; highest peak, Monte Nero, 5,310 ft., in Cephalonia; subject to frequent earthquakes; rich in marble, sulphur, salt, coal, wine, olives, currants, fruit. Formed into a province called Thema of Cep helen i a, IX. cent.; gradually taken by Venetians from XIII. cent. onwards; Pa ed to France, 1797; made an independent state, 1800; retaken by French, 1807; came under the protection of Brit., 1815; ceded to Greece, 1863. They may fairly be said to have started ‘European philosophy. Thales declared water to be the underlying principle of all things. _Anaximenes thought it was air, and Hippo moisture. Anaxagoras thought the Universe the work of mind, conceived as thin substance.
