BEAUMONT

Sir George; bom of an ancient family in Leicestershire in 1753, po e ed considerable skill as a landscape-painter, but was noted especially as a munificent patron of the arts. establishment of the National Gallery was mainly owing to his exertions, and sixteen of its fine paintings, chiefly landscapes, including one by N. Fou in, tliree by Claude, and the Blind Fiddler of Wilkie, were his gifts. He died in 1827.
