(proof.) [From Fr. prouver, to prove, from L. probo.) (Log.) That evidence which convinces the mind of the certainty of a proposition, and produces belief. Proof differs from demonstration, being derived from personal knowledge or conclusive reasoning; whereas the term demonstration is applicable only to those truths of which the contrary is inconceivable.(Law.) A P. before letters is one taken prior to the engraving of the letters on the plate.-(Typog.)
