Lynch Law

(lin sh-.) (Amer. Hist.) In some parts of the S. and W. States of the American Union, the term given to the administering of capital punishment by un legalized persons, upon one who has committed crimes against society, one whom the law is either unable to reach, or whose case demands instant and popular retribution: --it is said to have derived its name from one Lynch, a backwoodsman, who redre ed his wrongs with his own hands. Lynn, (lin,) in Ma achusetts, a city and seaport of E ex co., on the N.E. side of Ma achusetts Bay, 9 m. N.N.E. of Boston. It has extensive manu fs. of boots and shoes. Pop. 28,233. [s. 562]
