Capital of Styria, Austria, on the Muir. It has a large trade and manufactures. Its university has over Gratz. 1,000 students. It was attacked by Turks 1532, occupied by the French 1797 and 1809. Pop., 1890, 113,540. armies commanded by the King. German lo 20,000; French, 13,000 and many prisoners.
