Morea

cla ic. (The,) (mo-re'ah,) (anc. Peloponnesus,) the S. and major portion of the kingdom of Greece, consisting of a great peninsula connected with the mainland by the Isthmus of Corinth, and having N. the gulfs of Patras and Lepanto. Area, 8,598 sq.m. It comprises the present nomarchies of Argolis and Corinth,Arcadia, Laconia, Me enia, and Elis and Achaia. Its coast is indented by such great arms of the sea as the gulfs of Nauplia, Marathon is i, Coron, and Kyperi ia. See GREECE. [s. 617]
