HIPPOPOTAMUS

(Lat.), n. m. Hip-po(po3)-po2t'a2m(a3m)- U3s(u4s). Gr., in-iroTroTaftos (from tmro, a horse, and irora^os, a river). Fr., hippo pot a me. Ger., Flu pferd, Nilpferd. The only genus of the Omnivora, family Hippopotamidce, characterized by a ma ive body with an extremely thick skin having few hairs; a large head with a short, blunt muzzle, small eyes and ears, short, ma ive legs and feet, each terminated by four hoofed toes. [A, 359 (a, 39).] Denies hippopotami. Fr., dents d'hippo pot a me (ou de chetlal mar in). Ger., Flu pferdzcihne, Nilpferdzdhne. The teeth of the h.; anciently used in epilepsy.
