Fehr.; earthquakes frequent. S. belonged to Spain, 1526-1822, and from 1823-39 was member of Central Amer. Federation, after di olution of which it became independent republic. Executive power by Pres., legislative authority by held of 42 members. Capital, San Congre port, Acatjutlo; produces coffee, S.; chief rubber, tobacco, indigo, timber; sugar, include gold, silver, antimony. minerals Education free and compulsory; chief R.C.
