[Named after Etienne de Flacourt, Director of the French East India Company, who headed an expedition to Madagascar in A. D. 1648, and wrote an account of it.] Bot.: The typical genus of the order Flacourtiacese. It consists of shrubs or trees. The fruits of Flacourtia ramontchi, sapid a , and sepiaria are eaten. The young leaves and roots of F. cat a phracta are astringent and stomachic, and are prescribed in parts of India for diarrhea and general debility. ( Lindley .)
