[Pref. trachy-, and Gr.ops =the face.] Zool .: A genus of Vampyri (q. v.), with one species, Trachyops cirrhosus , from Pernambuco. Lat. trachyp ter (us); Lat. fem. pl. adj. suff. -idæ.] Ichthy.: A family of fishes constituting the division Tæniiformes of the order Acanthopterygii. Body ribbon-shaped, with the dorsal extending its whole length, anal absent, caudal fin rudimentary, or not in the longitudinal axis of the fish; ventrals thoracic, either composed of several rays or reduced to a single long filament; coloration generally silvery, with rosy fins.
