Hatchet

(hach'it.) [ From Fr.hacher, an axe.] A small bladed, short-handled axe, used for chopping purposes. -Among the N. American Indians, the H. is the figurative emblem of war and hostility; thus, to take up the hatchet, is a metaphorical term expre ing a declaration of war; to bury the hatchet, a restoration of peace or amity.
