monochromy (monokromi)

[ As mono chrome +-y3.] The art or practice of painting in monochrome, or in one or more shades of a single color. Monochromy is advantageously employed when it is desired, on the one hand, to avoid the brilliancy attendant on the introduction of several distinct colours, and, on the other, the dullne consequent on the exclusive use of a single tone.
