Body elongate, low, naked, or covered with scales; one or two dorsal fins, the spinous portion being always shorter and much le developed than the soft; development of anal like that of soft dorsal; ventrals with one spine and five rays; gill-openings more or le wide. Palæont.: Three fo il genera are known: Callipteryx, scalele , from the Eocene of Monte Bolca; Trachinopsis, from the Upper Tertiary of Lorca, Spain, and Pseudoeleginus, from the Miocene of Licata, Sicily.
