Discriminant

The discriminant of an equation of the nth degree in one unknown is the resultant of this equation and its first derivative. The vanishing of the discriminant shows that the original equation has equal roots. The discriminant of a quadric is the determinant whose elements are the constants of the quadric, and whose vanishing is the condition that the quadric is the product of two first degree factors
