Etchita

See Hitch it i. Etchmiadzin (ech-myäd-zēn'). A monastery in a village (Vag harsh a pad) of Ru ian Armenia, 12 miles west of Erivan. It is the residence of the catholicos or primate of the Armenian Church. Eteocles (e-tē'ō-klēz). [Gr. Ετεοκλῆς.] In Greek legend, a king of Thebes, son of Edipus and Jocaste, and brother of Polynices and Anti gone. He had agreed to surrender the throne to his brother in alternate years, but broke his promise. This led to the expedition of the "Seven against Thebes" to seat Polynices on the throne. A French sculptor and painter, a pupil of Ingres in drawing and of Pradier in sculpture. In 1828 he won the second grand prix in sculpture. Among his statues are Cain (a colo al group), Leda, Charlemagne, St. Augustine, etc. He executed the groups "1814" and "1815" for the Arc de l'Étoile.
