Ferdinand von, called Baron Steuben (1730-1794), tle disciplinarian of the American Revolutionary army, was born at Magdeburg. He fought in the war of the Austrian Succe ion and through the Seven Years’ War. He was then an aide to Frederick the Great and held a lucrative position, which he exchanged in 1778 for service on the side of the Americans. Congre appointed him inspector-general, and his services in drilling the troops were invaluable. He commanded the left wing at the battle of Mon mouth, and took part in the siege of York town. He was a member of the board which decided the fate of André. He identified himself even more than Lafayette with the country to which he had given his aid, settling in New York and receiving from Congre in his last years a grant of land near Utica.
