2. water-fowl, s. 1. A bird that frequents the water, or lives about rivers, lakes, or in or near the sea; an aquatic-fowl. The term is generally applied to web-footed birds, but is also used of herons, plovers, and other birds that frequent rivers, lakes, and the sea-shore. 2. Such birds collectively; wila fowl. water-fox, subst. A name given to the carp, on account of its supposed cunning.
