DE KAY, CHARLES

(1848), an Amer. author and critic, b. in Washington, D.C. He graduated from Yale University, in 1868, and for many years was art and literary editor of the New York Tinies and The New York Evening Post. During 1894-7 he was American Consul General at Berlin. Germany. Among his works are The Bohemian, 1878; Vision of Nimrod, 1881; Life and Works of Barye, Sculptor, 1889; Bird Gods (a study of myths and religions of ancient Europe), 1898; and he has translated from the German The Family Letters of He in rich Heine.; Eng. dramatist and pamphleteer; pamphlets include The Wonderful Year, The Gull’s Hornbook, etc.; chief plays, The Shoemakers’ Holiday, Old For tun at us, and others in collaboration with Webster, Mas singer, Chettle, Ford, and Middle ton; writing prolific and unequal but of high emotional quality.
