Sikhs

A religious sect in Northern India, founded in the sixteenth century by Babu Nának. They profe a reformed form of Hinduism, rejecting caste and various Brahmin i cal superstitions. Under Govind Rai, towards the end of the seventeenth century, they formed a strong military organization, which reached its zenith under Ranjit Singh early in the nineteenth century. Their power was finally crushed by the British in 1851.
