Gymnastics

The athletic exercises practiced among the Greeks and Romans partook of the nature of our modern track events combined with what is now commonly termed gymnastics. The usual acceptation of the term in our day covers more especially that part of the education of youth consisting of bodily exercises within doors in gymnasia and with appliances. Of these appliances the principal are the horizontal bar, the parallel bars, the flying rings, the trapeze, the horse, the ladders, pulleys, chest weights, Indian clubs, medicine ball, wand, dumb-bells, and the like.
