[Heb., platform.] The place where Pilate sat at Christ's trial. It appears to have been a te ellated pavement outside the pretorium or judgment hall, on which the tribunal was placed, from which the governor pronounced final sen tence. When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he brought Jesus forth, and sat down in the judgment seat in a place that is called the Pavement, but in the Hebrew, Gabbatha . John xix. 13.
