(spik'-nard). Xard. A name given to the rhizome of various species of valerian, and especially to A'ardostachys jatamansi, formerly much used in medicine, now used in washes and unguents, chiefly in the Orient. Unof. It is not to be confounded with American spikenard, Aralia racemosa.
