Drumgoole

John C., an American clergyman; born in Long ford co., Ireland, in 1828. He was ordained a Roman Catholic priest in the United States, and in 1871 began an organjzed mi ion in New York city for homele boys. The work grew under his charge and he built in New York city a home called the ‘‘ Mi ion of the Immaculate Virgin,” and established an industrial farm of over 600 acres on Long Island, all in the interest of homele boys. He died in New York city, March 28, 1888. —eeeee Drummond, Sir George Gordon, an English soldier; born in 1771. He entered the British army as ensign 20 «1789; became lieutenant-colonel 1794; served with distinction in the Holland campaign, 1794-1795, and_in Egypt, 1800; was staff-officer at Jamaica several — on duty in Canada, 1808-1811; promoted lieutenant general, 1811; again ordered to Canada as second in command under Sir George Prevost, 1813; planned and effected the capture of Fort Niagara, and planned the succe ful attack on Black Rock and Buffalo; led a combined military and naval force against Oswego and destroyed the American works and stores, May, 1814; was in command of the British forces at the battle of Lundy’s Lane, July 25, and in August invested, but failed to capture, Fort Erie. Tn 1815 he was appointed Governor-General of Canada, resigned and returned to England, and in 1817 received the grand cro of the Order of the Bath. He died in 1854.
