Exchange

The mutual giving up of an equal number of prisoners by hostile states or armies; the act of two officers changing regiments, battalions, batteries, troops or companies. Exchange of Prisoners. — An act of convenience to both belligerents and takes place, number for number, rank for rank, wounded for wounded, with mutual added conditions. In exchanging prisoners of war, such numbers of persons of inferior rank may be substituted as an equivalent for one of superior rank as may be agreed upon by cartel.
