Candelabrum

(kān-del-a'brüm,) (pl. CANDELABRA.) [L., from candela, candle.] Originally, a candlestick among the ancients; afterwards, a support for a lamp. They were made of wood, metal, or marble, and were carved into a variety of elegant forms. A shaft, standing on 3 short legs, was a common shape. Among the moderns, the term is generally applied to a chandelier or candlestick with decorated branches. [s. 135]
