In tuning tempered instruments, like the pianoforte, one of the notes that are first carefully tuned as a basis in tuning the others. Also called bearing. bearing-rein (bar'ing-rān), n. The rein by which the head of a horse is held up in driving. bearing-robe (bar'ing-rob), п. A garment answering the same purpose as a bearing-cloth. It was formerly customary for the sponsors to present such a robe to the child. bearish (bar'ish), a.
