(ban'tăm,) a residency of the Dutch E. Indies, forming the W. extremity of the island of Java, b. on the E. by the p. of Batavia; C. Serang. The town of B., on a bay of same name, 40 miles of Batavia, was the first establishment founded by the Dutch in the island of Java in 1602. It was abandoned in 1817. [s. 72]
