Mosaic

Small rectangular fragments of gla , marble, precious stones, ., of various colors, and cemented on a ground of stucco, in such a manner as to imitate the tints and gradations of painting. The art was practised with considerable succe by the ancients; and some of their productions still excite our admiration. [s. 619]
