( Owen . ) ěp-1-něph-ĕ-lě, s. [Gr. epinephelos =clouded: epi =upon, and nephele a cloud.] Entom.: A genus of butterflies, family Satyride. Epinephele janira is the Meadow Brown. It is smoky-brown with a white-pupilled black spot on the upper side of the fore wings. The male is so much darker than the female that Linnæus thought them different insects, calling the former Papilio janira and the latter P.jurtina.
