A common name for the Confervaceæ, or fresh-water algæ that consist of long, soft filaments resembling silk. See Confervaceæ.-2. Same as milkweed, 1. silk-winder (silk'winder), n. 1. A silk-reel. - 2. A winding-machine for transferring raw silk from the hanks to bobbins in readine for spinning.
